User attributes and data segmentation

What is data segmentation?
The segmentation feature makes the reporting in &frankly even more powerful. It enables you to slice data based on attributes assigned to each user.

Can anyone install attributes?
This feature is only available to our Workplace and Enterprise subscriptions.

Using attributes is a good solution for large organizations that want to segment the results. For smaller companies, we do not recommend using attributes. The reason for this is that there is a higher risk of results not showing, due to integrity reasons. Using attributes means that we have more information (group membership, gender, age) about each user and that there would be a higher chance of exposing an answer. Our integrity framework secures the user anonymity and will block you from viewing results if there is a risk for exposing an answer. For smaller organizations, this is more likely to occur since groups are smaller and the number of people is less.

How do we install user attributes?

    1. Define what kind of attributes your organization need.

    2. Sign in to your account and go to Account > User management.

    3. You can either start one of our standard attributes, such as Age, Tenure, Gender, Country or City, or create customized attributes, please see instructions further down.

When the attribute(s) has been added, they will show up on each user’s profile under People > Users. If you already have your users and groups in &frankly, you can fill in an additional excel file, with all email addresses and the attributes required for each user. Please send the file to [email protected] and we will import the attributes to your account.

You can also add (or adjust) attributes to the users directly in the system. Go to People > Users and open up the profile (click on the name or the email address, and the user profile will show up). If you don’t have that many users in the system, we recommend that you add the attributes to each user directly in &frankly.

Note: for attributes based on dates, it is important to use the format YYYY-MM-DD. If you want to use the attribute "Age", you should enter the birth date to the excel file, or directly to the user’s profile (not the actual age).

How to add custom attributes:
When adding attributes, you have to insert the name of the attribute as well as the name that you want to appear in the result view. If you want to add Age/Birthdate as a customized attribute, the name should be "Birthdate" and the name on the results page should be "Age".

Step-by-step:

  1. Define the attribute

  2. Name what the attribute should show as in reporting (age instead of birthdate)

  3. Decide if the attribute is mandatory or not

  4. Select a format (text, numbers, date)

  5. Define values allowed (male, female, non-binary)
